Quarantine Diaries: Pandemic Blues and How I Combat It By Editing My Selfies

9:36 PM

Like grief, it comes in waves. Some days, my emotions are stable, and I feel like I'm okay. I'm fine. Some days, it's like I need to crawl out of my own skin just to feel more at ease. Some days, I just tend to get weepy, even Tiktok videos can make me cry. I'm usually never like that, but because of how this pandemic is turning out, I might as well recognize that I'm psychotic. Kidding.

For starters, and just a little bit of a background of what I have been up to, and why my mental health is slightly tipping over the edge, I've been in isolation with my mom for two weeks. Meaning I haven't been out for the past two weeks. I was able to go out once, and that was when I had my first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. Other than that, I'm pretty much working at my desk. Literally been sitting in my chair for more or less 18 hours per day. With that I need to keep myself entertained, busy, and just overall occupied so that I won't think too much of the situation (even though it's literally all I could think about most of the time).

Anyway, one of the many, many things I do to keep myself occupied is (inevitably as a girly girl who sometimes need some validation) I take a lot of selfies. But I go out of my way to take them, and I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.

Going extra for selfies

Here's a guided step on how I edit my selfies (not that any of you are asking):
  1. To have more natural selfies, what I do is take a video of myself thru Tiktok or Instagram. Save it. And then screenshot parts of the video.
  2. Now you see the photo quality isn't at its very best, right? What you do is download the Remini app. Open it, and then choose the photo you want to enhance. (Free version of this app allows you to edit 10 photos at max everyday)
  3. Once you're done, here's where the color editing kind of kicks in. I edit first using the VSCO App, choose AL3 filter, and play around with the other tools, and see which mixes suits best for the photo. I couldn't really give you the specifics because color editing almost always depends on the lighting of the photo. Believe me, no filter fits all.
  4.  Once that's settled in. I take another extra step of editing thru Lightroom. Yes, that is how intricate I edit my photos. Anyway, I bought one of Camie Juan's presets called "Renaissance" and I have been using that preset ever since. Adjust exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, color and the vignette.
  5. And voila. The results are seen on the photo above.
Also, I always go for slight to medium underexposed photos because it just fits my aesthetic. You can always find your own when you try to balance everything out on your IG feed 😁

I hope you find this quite helpful

In summary, here are the apps that I use to edit my photos:
  • Remini (free)

  • VSCO (w/ membership to gain access with the AL3 filter)

  • Lightroom (w/ Camie Juan's Renaissance preset)
