The Potential Cost of Running a Full-Time Blog in a Small to Medium Scale

10:46 PM

I started blogging way back 2012 when Tumblr was on its peak as a blogging platform. It was easy and super user-friendly. Back then, I named my blog "Miss B's Blog". I don't know, guys. Apparently, that was the best my naive mind can think of.

I made made the move to blogspot when I was in college and found the platform more sustainable for someone who plans to do blogging more in the future, may it be as a hobby or, with a bit of a luck and opportunity, a full-time job.

If you have read one of my 2015 blog post, I shared my sentiments on how it's like to be an accountancy student with a different passion. Blogging has been my ultimate outlet whenever I get stressed out from school, and now even, from work. And I did consider doing this as a full-time job but, even as of writing, I don't think I have that much following to completely leave my job and do blogging full-time. Besides, whether you believe me or not, I have grown to love my profession even if most days it takes a lot of me. It has become part of who I am and I love how I can be able to give advice to people based on my experiences as an accountant.

And because you can never remove the accountant persona from me, I took the the liberty to run by you the potential cost of running a full-time blog, just in case you are considering of switching the gears from your 9-5 jobs. I made this cost listing because, I, too, was curious on how much cash will running a full-time blog really cost.

Being true to my roots, below is a slightly comprehensive income statement of how much cost I will incur on an annual basis granting I will invest more on blogging now. Considering that blogging is merely my hobby, it is a conservative estimate to place zero as revenue, and that is also a realistic amount for me as of the moment.

Imagine burning thru cash annually with this amount of cost with a higher risk of zero to negative return. My pragmatic consciousness would be screaming hell at me for the rest of my life.

Currently, since I just bought my own domain name (cue the celebratory music🎉🥳. Honestly, I've been wanting this for so long), I've already spent 259php, and that is the only thing I have actually spent on the list above, and the only thing I will probably spend for the rest of the year in relation to this blog.

While I do know that there are a lot of free subscriptions I can use to continue running my blog, and that is what I'm doing right now, but when you want to do something on a larger scale, there is always a much bigger price to pay, and investing in these subscriptions would potentially increase traffic and exposure to my blog.

A couple of things I didn't include on my hypothetical income statement are:
  • the cost to hire a web designer
  • the cost of joining webinars/bootcamps/online training
This is because these costs are at 10-15% of being realizable to me 😂 Although, I would really want to hire a web designer. I'm planning to change my blog layout.

But yeah, currently, it's just not practical for me to invest on these things because I do not see it's income-generating potential yet. Besides, I just love what I'm doing here, and for now, that's all that matters.

My two-Cents on pursuing a job in the arts:
I've heard in one of Slater Young and Kryz Uy's podcast that being successful in, basically, any endeavour, is a combination of both opportunity and luck. But I would like to add one more to that mixture, especially if you want to pursue something within the realm of Arts. For me, success is a mixture of OPPORTUNITY, LUCK and PRIVILEGE. I've seen a lot of talented people who pursued a business degree just because it is much sustainable in the Philippine setting. In a reality where people, almost always want free art, free marketing, free exposure, it is hard to find people or, in a more business setting, customers who would pay as much for these kinds of things. What I think most people fail to understand is that art, in whatever form it may be, requires a lot of time and effort, and is as much important as all the other things we do here in the world. We like to appreciate art, but never wanted to pay for it. Anyway, those are just my two cents on that topic.

I know I sounded kind of a cynic, and I seemed like I was discouraging you, guys, to start blogging. But that is totally not the case. As a matter of fact, I do encourage more people to blog because it is kind of like an online journal where you can express your thoughts, and at the same time, can be a good way to educate and help people learn. I was merely sharing my experience and my thoughts on why it is impractical for me to be spending a huge amount of money for something that wouldn't give me monetary income for now.

So that's it for this week's Grown Up Talk series. I hope this somehow gave you insights, especially if you're planning to start your own blog.

Probably, next week, I could discuss the free tools that I am currently using for my blog and my social media materials.

Keep Posted.
